Sake exports in 2022 hit a record high
Yokohama Customs announced that the volume of sake exports in 2022 reached a record high of 35,895 kiloliters. When converted to 1.8 liter bottles, it is equivalent to about 19.94 million bottles. Although there was a temporary decline due to the spread of the new coronavirus, demand recovered as restaurants resumed operations amid the spread of the Japanese food boom overseas. Sake breweries take on the challenge of further expanding business opportunities.
According to Yokohama Customs, the export volume in 2010 reached 1.64 times that of 2020, when it was depressed due to the corona disaster. The United States is the largest export destination, followed by China and South Korea. The average unit price per liter is also the highest ever at 1,323 yen. In Hong Kong and Singapore, it sells for over 2,500 yen and is popular as a luxury item.
